At first they had a friendly relationship. Epidemics of smallpox, cholera, and other diseases swept through the Paiute tribes in the 1830's and 1840's. the limited contact with European fur trappers and settlers changed abruptly when a large scale migration over the Oregon Trail began in the mid 1840's. over time more and more land was claimed by whites. to the south Mormons arriving took the best of the Paiute land. also by the 1840's the northern and the southern Paiutes acquired guns and began raiding white settlements. the gold rush brought a lot of people through Paiute lands. And then the Silver Strike brought more people which lead to the Pyramid Lake War.Large reservations for the northern Paiutes where established near the Pyramid Lake and Walker River to maintain peace between the two cultures. However in 1860 traders from the Pony express kidnapped two Paiute girls and raped them.tribal members responded by attacking the Pony Express station killing five white men in the process of rescuing the girls.the Paiutes then killed 43 men sent to avenge the deaths. after several minor battles including an 800 volunteer army from California peace was restored between the Paiutes and the whites.
